Integration of Technology

The second level of integration focused on facilitating educational instruction. Interactive whiteboards within the classrooms transformed the way the teacher and student interacted, re-invigorating class participation.

A Virtual Learning Environment or VLE, (a VLE comprises of a range of computer mediated communication tools providing students with the ability to engage in online learning and communication activities) was set up on the local website, this provided an interactive forum for the students and teachers to discuss topics and techniques between both schools. A webcam was also setup to provide instant access and communication between the two schools, (a webcam is a small video camera which transmits simultaneous video images from two remote computers connected together through a local network or through the internet). In addition, video-conferencing facilities were provided in order to stimulate student-led collaborative activities. Wireless access to the Internet transformed the learning environment and enabled students and teachers to engage in authentic learning. Concept mapping software was introduced in order to scaffold students’ thinking processes. A series of software resources were also supplied. In addition, access to the Atomic Learning site providing training on a range of software to all participants and their parents or carers.
